How to Use Oxygen Absorbers
- Fill and organize all Mylar bags before opening the absorber package.
- Prepare your heat sealer and leave enough room at the top of each bag for a complete seal.
- Open one sealed pack of oxygen absorbers.
- Place the correct absorber size inside each bag.
- Press out as much excess air as practical.
- Heat-seal the bag immediately.
- Double-seal the bag when using an impulse sealer.
- Store any unused absorbers in a heat-sealed barrier bag or a tightly closed glass mason jar.
Do not judge an oxygen absorber solely by whether the bag becomes visibly vacuum-tight. Oxygen absorbers remove oxygen, but they do not remove the nitrogen that makes up most of the air. Powders and tightly packed foods may also show very little visible contraction even when the absorber is functioning properly.
Important Food-Safety Information
Use oxygen absorbers only with properly dried, low-moisture or correctly freeze-dried foods.
Do not use oxygen absorbers to store moist foods at room temperature. Removing oxygen from a moist food package can create conditions that allow dangerous anaerobic bacteria to grow.
Oxygen absorbers are also generally unnecessary for granulated sugar, salt and similar products that do not require oxygen removal. Sugar may become extremely hard when stored with an oxygen absorber.
The packets are intended to be placed inside food packages but are not edible. Do not cut open the packets or allow their contents to mix with food.

Which size should I choose?
Choose 300cc absorbers for quart and 1-gallon Mylar bags. Choose 2000cc absorbers for 5-gallon Mylar bags and food-storage buckets.
How many absorbers should I use?
A properly filled 1-gallon bag commonly uses one 300cc absorber. A 5-gallon bag commonly uses one or two 2000cc absorbers. Lightweight foods with more trapped air may require greater absorber capacity.
Can I use more capacity than required?
Yes. Using slightly more oxygen-absorbing capacity than necessary will not harm properly dried food. It can provide an additional margin for headspace, trapped air and small amounts of oxygen that may enter through the packaging over time.
Why didn’t my Mylar bag shrink tightly?
Oxygen represents only part of the air inside the bag. Nitrogen remains after the oxygen has been absorbed. Powders, flour, freeze-dried foods and densely packed products may also prevent the bag from visibly pulling inward.
Check the sealed area for leaks and inspect the space near the top of the bag. If the two sides are being drawn together, the absorber is likely working even when the entire package does not appear vacuum-sealed.
